An old friend of mine posted this picture on a social network and it simply hit home for me.
Through our travels we learn so much by seeing the lifestyle, values, beliefs and mannerisms of other cultures. We are able to obtain a new perspective on the way of life and consequently begin to challenge our own thoughts and mindset that society has raised us with. Therefore, when I travel to a new place and all these things begin to happen I recreate a part of myself because of newly formed knowledge and beliefs. A true example of this our decision to move to Europe due to changes in our beliefs that were caused by our travels.Unfortunately, there are people that may never understand the words in this picture.
Traveling helps you open up your mind but you don’t need to travel to have an open mind about life and be flexible to changing your own way of life.
I think in North America people are more susceptible to this kind of single-minded behavior because of the geographic isolation with other countries in the world. In contrast, in Europe many countries share borders with other countries, in America that is not the case. Therefore, I can’t blame people who think Americans have the mindset that they are the only ones in this world – there’s a reason for it. I just wish that EVERYONE could experience different cultures or at least be OPEN to the idea that, YES, there are other people in this world that live their life differently and your way of living is NOT necessarily the best no matter what you think. If more people had this kind of open mentality then I believe people would take steps that would have realistic major impact on improving their lives. Instead, there are too many people that think “it’s just the way things are”.
I find it absolutely OUTRAGEOUS and RIDICULOUS that people actually settle with this idea and live subpar or mediocre lives then DIE having done nothing that is meaningful to them! Being a believer of not settling with “the way things are”, I could go about a worldwide mission of trying to teach people new ways. However, it’s not something that is meaningful to ME. Even if it was, I only use my time and energy to help those who WANT help. The task of trying to help someone that doesn’t seek or want help is, in my opinion, wasteful.
